A bullet... a prayer... a dreamSuch were the events that gave birth to the Society of Jesus, that three of the founding companions celebrate significant anniversaries in 2006: Francis Xavier, Patron of Australia; and Peter Faber, first priest in the Jesuits were born in 1506; and Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuits and author of the Spiritual Exercises—the spiritual core of Jesuit Life—died in 1556. Looking back and celebrating the heritage bequeathed to us by these extraordinary figures is also an occasion to consider current challenges and hopes for the future. Unlikely Companions looks at the impact and central importance of these three founding companions and identifies the way in which their spirit and mission are being lived out now and into the future by men and women captured by their vision. It also encompasses how women and men—Jesuits and lay people—drawn to their vision, have and are responding to the founder's legacy in Australia. In particular in 2006, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the introduction of Jesuit education to Australia when the Austrian Jesuits opened a school at Sevenhill South Australia in 1856.
